The best longform stories involve more than just stunning words or images. They start with a union of compelling people and circumstances, continue through a structured storytelling process and end with a piece that illuminates something universal about the human condition. This workshop aims to deconstruct the narrative process, sharpen your storytelling skills and provide a framework for crafting immersive, transcendent stories.

Creating online communities as journalism
Social media platforms like Facebook are deemphasizing the “news feed” model on which news orgs have relied. Instead, they’re prioritizing the power of private groups and online communities, worlds of intimate conversation entirely independent of algorithmic updates and brand-written headlines. This presents us with an amazing opportunity: to create online communities around our work, targeting existing places that exist for this (like Facebook groups again, or even Reddit, comments sections and more). In this workshop, we’ll discuss the ways reporters and editors can think of online communities, how to create and launch them, how to select the platform on which it exists, how to sustain and stoke conversation and more.

The Science of B.S. Detection
Science is the art of learning how NOT to fool ourselves, and can teach us a few tricks that come in especially handy for journalists: Understanding exactly why "affirmative action" is critical to change, for example, and eye witness testimony all but useless; why what we see ‘right in front of our noses” is often an illusion; how contradictory (even mutually exclusive) perspectives can both be true; how quality and quantity are related in ways that help us make sense of everything from the effects of income inequality to climate change (“more” is “different”); why statements such as “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” demonstrate a basic misunderstanding of probability; the meaning of “moral luck” and why algorithms perpetuate stereotypes (and become self-fulling prophesies); why they/we “all look alike,”: how quantum mechanics can help us look out for the “observer effect” (the presence of a journalist can change everything).

Repairing the neglect: How journalists can begin to cover marginalized communities
It’s no secret that journalists have done a poor job telling the stories of many communities — people of color, people who are poor, people with disabilities or other special needs, the list could go on and on. In some cases, we’ve misrepresented them or stereotyped them. In others, we’ve ignored entire communities altogether. In this interactive session, we’ll look at how journalists can use empathy and focused listening to engage more deeply with diverse communities and begin to repair those relationships. This session will use American Press Institute research as its foundation. Attendees will work in small groups to examine their own identities in order to help them rethink their approach to interviewing sources, doing research in their communities and interacting with the public.

This CAMP session is for teaching journalists how to dig into under-reported stories about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities. To Podcast or Not to Podcast
Podcasting is exploding, causing some to believe the market is saturated. But podcasting still represents only a small segment of the media landscape (less than 10%), and in recent years has been largely dominated by particular types of people and stories, which is what led to the creation of Critical Frequency in early 2018. Aiming to provide a platform for podcasters of color, women podcasters, and pods from areas well outside the media hubs, Critical Frequency currently produces six podcasts, with three more slated this year, and has managed to monetize in a variety of ways. In this session we'll talk about when it does and doesn't make sense to start a podcast and, if you go for it, what to expect in terms of time commitment and monetization.

The Pitfalls and Potential of Growth Hacking for Journalists
Today’s brands or businesses often use growth hacking - a set of rapid, low-cost marketing experiments on social media - to gain more followers or customers. But how well does the “growth hacking” approach work for journalists in 2018? What challenges are unique to our profession and how can we help each other overcome them? This panel, consisting of a journalism professor, academic and social media manager, will explore the modern journalists’ quest to elevate their profiles online and reach a wider audience. Participants will situate their individual social media growth goals in a larger industry context, and will leave with actionable solutions to thrive and help other women in the era of hashtags and retweets. The panel will include a hands-on training exercise and helpful resources journalists can use to continue the “growth hacking” practice, however it manifests in their own careers.
